In English
Novena to St. Francis Xavier
Why we pray for nine days asking for the intercession of St. Francis Xavier, the story behind it, and how to pray it.
Why nine days?
A novena is a Catholic devotion of praying for nine days in a row for one intention. The word comes from the Latin "novem", nine.
After Jesus ascended into heaven, the apostles, waiting for the Holy Spirit, devoted themselves to prayer together with Mary, the mother of Jesus (Acts 1:14). Church tradition sees those nine days of prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost as the model for every novena.
The story of the Novena of Grace
In 1633, in Naples, Italy, a Jesuit priest, Fr. Marcello Mastrilli, had vowed to go as a missionary to Japan, where Christians were being cruelly persecuted.
While he was overseeing the removal of decorations put up for the feast of the Immaculate Conception, a hammer fell from above and struck him on the head. As he lay dying, St. Francis Xavier appeared to him and asked him to renew his vow to go to Japan. He rose completely cured.
According to tradition, the saint also made a promise: those who ask for his intercession for nine days, from 4 to 12 March (ending on the anniversary of his canonisation, 12 March 1622), and receive the sacraments, will receive the grace that is good for their salvation. That is why it is called the "Novena of Grace".
Fr. Mastrilli made his cure and vision known to everyone. He then went to Japan and died there as a martyr for Christ on 17 October 1637. The novena he spread was soon prayed all over the world. An older tradition also tells of a boy in Goa, crippled from birth, who was cured through this novena in 1615.
When to pray it
The Novena of Grace is usually prayed from 4 to 12 March. It is also prayed in the nine days before the saint’s feast day (3 December), and it may be prayed at any time of the year.
Our Religious Harmony Festival also falls just before the saint’s feast, in the last week of November. Those who cannot come to the festival can join it from home through these nine days of prayer.
How to pray it each day
- Make the sign of the cross and be still in God’s presence.
- Pray the novena prayer below, and quietly entrust your intention to God.
- Pray the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Traditionally the first two are said three times, in honour of the Holy Trinity, and the Glory Be ten times, in thanksgiving for the saint’s ten years of mission.
- Finish with the versicle and the closing prayer.
- If you can, receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist during the novena.
The novena prayer (all nine days)
O most amiable and most loving Saint Francis Xavier, in union with you I reverently adore the Divine Majesty. I rejoice exceedingly in the singular gifts of grace bestowed upon you during your life, and in your gifts of glory after death, and I give thanks to God for them.
I beseech you with all the affection of my heart to obtain for me, by your powerful intercession, the greatest of all blessings: that of living and dying in the state of grace.
I also beg of you to obtain for me the special favour I ask in this novena (name your intention silently). But if what I ask is not for the glory of God and the good of my soul, obtain for me what is more conducive to both. Amen.
Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be…
Pray for us, Saint Francis Xavier. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray
O God, who by the preaching and miracles of Saint Francis Xavier were pleased to join the peoples of the Indies to your Church: grant that we who honour his glorious merits may also follow his example. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Intentions for the nine days
The novena prayer is the same on all nine days. Alongside it, each day you may remember one part of the saint’s life and pray:
- 1. The call: Remembering the question that changed the saint’s life (Mark 8:36), for hearts that listen to God’s call.
- 2. Giving oneself: Like the saint who said "Here I am" and gave himself to the mission in India, for generous hearts.
- 3. Travellers: Through the saint who made long voyages by sea, for the safety of travellers and of our villagers living away from home and abroad.
- 4. The sick: Through the saint who cared for the sick in the hospitals of Goa, for the healing of the sick.
- 5. Workers: Remembering the saint who lived among the fishing people of the Tamil coast, for farmers, fishermen and all who labour.
- 6. Children and youth: Like the saint who taught children their prayers, for the education, well-being and faith of our children.
- 7. Families: That love, unity and peace may remain in our families.
- 8. Our village: That the religious harmony of a whole village celebrating together, across castes and faiths, may last for ever.
- 9. Thanksgiving: In thanksgiving for every blessing, and for the grace of the saint’s visit to our village; and for the eternal rest of our departed.
